75V Motor Driver ICs Target 48V Industrial Systems

Modern motion systems increasingly standardize around 24 V and 48 V bus architectures used in robotics, material handling and smart equipment. Addressing this range, STMicroelectronics introduces the STSPIN9P series of 75 V motor-drive ICs for configurable industrial drive designs.

Scaling one platform across multiple motors
The STSPIN9P family contains twelve devices allowing designers to adapt one hardware architecture to different motors and power levels up to 500 W. The STSPIN9P1 half-bridge and STSPIN9P2 full-bridge variants extend the STSPIN portfolio and support industrial automation, robotics, appliances, pumps, fans, textile machines and stage lighting.

Operating from 7 V to 75 V directly from the main supply bus, the IC eliminates the need for a separate auxiliary supply. Internal regulators power control logic and gate drivers, while an integrated charge pump enables high-side drive operation at 100 % duty cycle. Output current capability reaches 10 A.

Integrated analog control and configurable current behavior
The device includes an analog front end with a current-sense amplifier used with an external shunt resistor and a comparator that activates at a configurable current threshold. In versions with internal current limiting, this comparator feeds the control logic directly.

Designers can select the decay strategy using an external pin, choosing fixed off-time or PWM trimming depending on motor and load behavior. A dedicated pin adjusts gate-driver turn-on slew rate, allowing optimization between efficiency and electromagnetic emissions. Turn-off timing remains minimized to achieve short dead time in full-bridge configurations.

Built-in protection and pre-start diagnostics
Protection functions include undervoltage, overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature detection, with a thermal sensor integrated for each MOSFET. Open-load detection operates while the power stage is disabled, verifying motor connection before activation. These features support reliable operation in industrial motion subsystems within a digital supply chain where maintenance downtime is costly.

Reference hardware and evaluation boards
For BLDC and PMSM drives, the EVLSPIN9P1-3PH reference design combines three STSPIN9P12 half-bridge drivers into a three-phase driver supporting both three-shunt and single-shunt current sensing topologies.

Single-shunt evaluation boards are available for all variants. Half-bridge demonstrations include EVLSPIN9P11, EVLSPIN9P12, EVLSPIN9P15 and EVLSPIN9P16, while full-bridge evaluation platforms include EVLSPIN9P21, EVLSPIN9P22, EVLSPIN9P213 and EVLSPIN9P24.
