Virtual Firewall and Digital I/O Expand OT Network Security

Industrial networks increasingly combine operational technology with enterprise IT infrastructure, creating new cybersecurity and device-integration challenges. In this context, Belden Inc. introduced a new virtual firewall platform and its first Digital I/O modules under the Belden brand for industrial and data-center networking environments.

Virtual firewall for distributed OT cybersecurity
Cybersecurity in industrial and OT networks requires inspection of specialized protocols and the ability to protect distributed infrastructure. The next-generation Belden Virtual Firewall is designed as a hardware-agnostic security solution that can be deployed in data centers, industrial networks, or operational technology environments.

Because it operates independently of specific hardware platforms, the firewall can be installed wherever protection is required across an IT/OT network architecture. This approach allows organizations to extend security coverage as systems expand or as network architectures evolve.

The system includes multiple security mechanisms typically used in industrial cybersecurity deployments. These include deep packet inspection of OT communication protocols, intrusion prevention capabilities designed to detect abnormal network activity, and high-availability configurations intended to maintain protection during system redundancy events.

Security capacity can be adapted through three licensing tiers, allowing organizations to scale cybersecurity coverage in line with changes in operational scale or network exposure.

Digital I/O modules added to Belden’s industrial portfolio
Alongside the cybersecurity platform, Belden introduced the LioN-X LC Digital I/O Modules, marking the first digital I/O modules released under the Belden brand.

Digital I/O modules serve as the interface layer between sensors, actuators and industrial control systems. In automated production lines or machine installations, these modules collect discrete signals from field devices and transmit them to controllers within the industrial network.

The LioN-X LC modules incorporate design changes intended to reduce Pin 1 current, which lowers overall system power requirements and contributes to improved efficiency. Lower current demand can also reduce thermal load and component stress in connected field devices, potentially lowering system operating costs.

These modules extend the LioN-X product family while adding field-level connectivity components to Belden’s broader industrial networking portfolio.

Expanding infrastructure for connected industrial systems
The combination of virtualized security functions and field-level I/O connectivity reflects the growing convergence between enterprise IT infrastructure and industrial automation networks. Industrial operators increasingly require scalable cybersecurity mechanisms alongside reliable device-level integration to support distributed control architectures and digitally connected production environments.

Belden’s additions address these requirements by providing a software-based security layer for OT networks and hardware interfaces for field devices, supporting integrated management across modern industrial network infrastructures.
