Coax-based fiber extension for multi-dwelling broadband deployment

Extending fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks inside multi-dwelling units remains a deployment bottleneck in broadband infrastructure projects, particularly where installation complexity and cost slow subscriber activation. In this context, Deutsche GigaNetz selected in-building fiber extension technology from InCoax Networks AB for German broadband deployments.

Addressing the in-building connectivity gap in FTTH rollout
Germany’s fiber expansion continues to increase the number of homes passed by fiber infrastructure, reaching 21.8 million in 2024, while approximately 8.6 million households are actively connected. This difference highlights the operational challenge of extending network access from the building entry point to individual apartments.

As a Tier-2 fiber network operator focused on privately funded FTTH infrastructure, Deutsche GigaNetz is deploying in-building network technologies intended to improve connection rates in multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environments.

Using existing coax infrastructure for last-meter connectivity
The InCoax solution enables broadband distribution over existing in-building coaxial cabling, reducing the need for additional fiber installation within buildings. This approach can reduce installation time and structural modifications while allowing operators to activate services more quickly.

The technology supports both fiber broadband and fixed wireless access (FWA) integration, enabling flexible broadband delivery models depending on building infrastructure and network architecture. Such approaches are increasingly relevant in digital infrastructure projects where rapid service activation and cost control influence rollout strategies.

Deployment considerations for network operators
In-building network extension remains a critical step in the FTTH deployment chain, particularly in high-density residential buildings. Simplifying this stage can support faster subscriber activation while maintaining broadband performance requirements.

The Deutsche GigaNetz deployment provides a reference implementation for InCoax as it expands its activities in the German fiber broadband market.
