KONTRON ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF THE NEW COBALT S1901 INTEGRATED MISSION COMPUTER

Kontron continues to expand on its line of rugged Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS), yet customizable Integrated Mission Computing platforms.

KONTRON ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF THE NEW COBALT™ S1901 INTEGRATED MISSION COMPUTER

Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT/Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), announces that its newest Integrated Mission Computing platform, the COBALT™ S1901, is now available for customer shipments.

In response to a market need for higher performance processing and I/O in a small, rugged package, Kontron is now shipping the COBALT™ S1901 Integrated Mission Computer. Developed in parallel with the similarly designed, transportation-focused EvoTRAC™S1901, the COBALT™ S1901 sets a new bar raising the level for processing, I/O and flexible expansion in a compact (13.0" x 7.0" x 4.0"), rugged package qualified to MIL-STD environmental levels (-40 °C to 71 °C, extended shock and vibration, IP67 etc). Kontron will showcase its latest COBALT™ S1901 and the company’s advanced computing platforms for the defense industry at the upcoming AUSA Annual Meeting 2021, October 11 in its booth number 1968.

The COBALT™ S1901 expands on Kontron’s successful COBALT™ 901 by leveraging a new, more highly-expandable and capable carrier card for rugged versions of Kontron’s COM Express® Type 6 or 7 modules. This new carrier offers vastly more I/O and expansion possibilities, including an on-board Ethernet switch supporting 1G, 2.5G and 10G ports, two mini-PCIe slots, three M.2 slots, and two MXM slots for high-performance GPU modules (or custom FPGA modules). When coupled with a high-performance COM Express® module such as Kontron’s Xeon-D based COMe-BBD7 module and optional GPUs such as NVIDIA’s T1000 or RTX3000, this enables the COBALT™ S1901 to package an unprecedented level of processing performance along with a quantum jump in front-panel I/O – not to mention plenty of room for custom I/O options.

"The COBALT™ S1901 fills an important space in the defense computing market," says RJ McLaren, Systems Product Manager. "By providing an environmentally-qualified system that offers a high-performance CPU coupled with potentially multiple GPUs and flexible I/O, the COBALT™ S1901 gives defense system integrators a new platform for hosting their challenging sensor-based applications without resorting to expensive blade-based chassis systems."

Sharing more than 80 percent of its components with the EvoTRAC™ S1901, the COBALT™ S1901 is a true example of maximizing dual-use technologies. The differences are limited to front-panel connector choices and particular COTS variant configurations, which are driven by particular market needs. The result is a rugged, environmentally qualified package ideal for hosting a wide range of defense applications.
