onsemi, a leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies, enjoyed a successful electronica in Munich, Germany. Kicking the event off with an announcement that Mercedes-Benz adopted onsemi silicon carbide (SiC) technology for traction inverters as part of a strategic collaboration for their all-electric VISION EQXX, the car itself attracted many curious visitors to the booth. onsemi also won “Best in Show” awards for two newly launched products and the “Electronics Excellence” award together with Ride Vision for an advanced safety solution for motorcycles.

onsemi’s VE-Trac SiC modules increase the efficiency and lower the weight of the all-electric Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX’s traction inverter, extending the electric vehicle’s (EV’s) range by up to 10%, leading to a record 1,202 km (747 mile) trip from Stuttgart, Germany to Silverstone, England. The companies will continue to collaborate on other car models.

The new Top-Cool MOSFETs from onsemi won “Best in Show” from Embedded Computing Design. The new devices feature top-side cooling to assist designers in challenging automotive applications, especially with motor control and DC/DC conversion. The thermal pad is on the top side which allows heat to be dissipated directly into a heatsink rather than via a typical printed circuit board (PCB). By using both sides of the PCB and decreasing the amount of heat going into it, the power density is increased, and the improved reliability of the new design adds to an overall extended system lifetime.

Dual-inductive rotary position sensor NCS32100 also won “Best in Show” from Embedded Computing Design. With the NCS32100, onsemi leveraged its 20+ years of expertise designing inductive sensors to combine the reliable benefits of inductive encoders with the accuracy and speed generally associated with mid- to high-end optical encoders. The device features firmware that directly outputs absolute position and velocity, providing an easy “plug and play” solution. High levels of configurability enable use with a wide range of printed circuit board (PCB) sensor designs, giving OEMs the ability to configure and differentiate their solutions.

From Electronic Specifier, onsemi and Ride Vision received the “Electronics Excellence Award” for their collaboration on Ride Vision’s industry-leading Collision Aversion Technology™ (CAT) for motorcycles. The solution uses machine-vision with artificial intelligence (AI) and works based on high-dynamic range data captured by AR0147AT, which are part of the Hayabusa sensor family.
