Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT/Embedded Computer Technology (ECT), announces the immediate availability of the Kontron VX3124, a rugged 3U VPX computing module built around a 16-core NXP LX2160A processor, purpose-designed for real-time embedded systems in defense, aerospace, transportation and industrial edge environments.
The 16 Arm® Cortex®-A72 cores ensure the VX3124 delivers exceptional multi-core performance with low power consumption in a compact VPX format, allowing seamless integration into multi-vendor VPX systems for secure high bandwidth, low latency real-time processing.
The fanless and SWaP optimized VX3124, featuring 16GB of soldered ECC DDR4, 32GB eMMC non-volatile storage and secure boot solution, is ideal for resilient, real-time embedded systems in rugged and long-life programs. Typical use cases will include UAVs, tactical systems, mobile rail units and industrial control, for applications such as signal intelligence, surveillance and automation.
"The Kontron VX3124 represents a leap forward in high-efficiency, modular edge computing for mission-critical environments," said Christophe Ferrande, Product Manager, Kontron. "The compact VPX design combined with robust Arm-based processing offers system designers and developers unmatched flexibility to scale performance without compromising SWaP or reliability – we are enabling secure, smarter, faster compute in places where others can't operate."
Longevity in mission-critical deployments is further assured by Kontron's long lifecycle support. Fully compliant with VITA 65 slot and module profiles, the VX3124 also meets stringent defense and government security standards, facilitating easier certification processes.
I/O and storage
Comprehensive I/O support meets a wide range of connectivity needs with the inclusion of dual GbE, USB 2.0/3.0 and configurable serial ports on the front panel; the backplane offers PCIe Gen3, 10G and 1G Ethernet, SATA, USB, serial interfaces, and IPMB-A/B system management for smooth integration with legacy systems, sensor arrays and high-speed accelerators.
For storage and expansion flexibility, a top-mounted M.2 socket (Type M, 22 x 42 mm) allows the integration of a SATA SSD module for additional high-speed local storage requirements such as data logging, video capture or buffered compute pipelines.
The Kontron VX3124 is available now with a guaranteed production availability of at least 10 years. A dedicated long-term services package is available beyond the end-of-life date, and a warranty extension of up to 5 years can be provided.
