Murata Expands High-Voltage MLCC Line with Compact 1.25kV C0G Capacitor

Applications such as onboard chargers for electric vehicles and high-performance consumer power supplies increasingly rely on resonant and snubber circuits to manage voltage peaks and ensure efficient power conversion. These circuits operate under repeated high-voltage and high-current stress, making component stability critical. As power systems transition from silicon MOSFETs to faster, higher-efficiency silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, capacitor requirements have risen toward ratings exceeding 1.2 kV to support reliable operation without thermal or performance degradation.

A More Capable MLCC for SiC-Based Designs
Murata’s new multilayer ceramic capacitor has been introduced to meet these evolving demands. The 15 nF, 1.25 kV device in a compact 1210 package offers C0G characteristics that preserve capacitance stability and minimize loss across a temperature range of –55°C to +125°C. This makes it suited for circuits where fluctuations in component performance can lead to reduced efficiency or potential failure. The device supports a capacitance lineup from 4.7 nF to 15 nF with tight tolerances, allowing designers flexibility in tuning high-voltage power topologies.

Engineering Differentiation Through Materials and Manufacturing
The MLCC’s performance is enabled by Murata’s proprietary ceramic formulations, electrode materials, thin-layer molding processes and precision stacking technology. These manufacturing capabilities allow the capacitor to maintain electrical stability under high operating voltages while remaining smaller than typical alternatives with comparable ratings. This level of performance in the 1210-inch size provides an advantage for engineers working with space-constrained EV powertrains or compact high-end consumer devices.

Commitment to Future Miniaturization and Sustainability
Murata plans further advances in high-voltage MLCC miniaturization, capacitance density and reliability. The company also continues to reduce environmental impact by optimizing material use, cutting waste and increasing recycling within its production processes.
