Powell Adds Modular Connectors for Harsh Environments

Designers of rail vehicles, defense platforms, and industrial automation systems often need to route power, control signals, and data through limited space while maintaining environmental protection. To address these requirements, Powell Electronics has added the Veam MOVE-MOD modular connector series from ITT Cannon to its portfolio for high-reliability applications.

The series is built around a snap-in modular architecture that allows multiple contact types to be arranged within a single circular connector body, reducing the number of separate interfaces required in a system.

Consolidating Multiple Functions in One Housing
Conventional equipment layouts frequently use separate connectors for power distribution, low-level signals, and data links. MOVE-MOD modules allow these functions to be combined in one connector, reducing panel space, cable complexity, and mating points.

This consolidation supports more compact installations in vehicles and machinery and simplifies harness architecture within a digital supply chain where standardized subassemblies are increasingly used.

Mechanical Retention for Mobile Equipment
The connectors use a bayonet coupling mechanism with a secondary locking feature designed to maintain secure mating under vibration and shock. These conditions are common in rail rolling stock, off-road vehicles, and mobile energy systems.

Environmental protection is rated to IP67, providing resistance to dust ingress and temporary immersion in water. The circular form factor distributes mechanical loads evenly and can reduce overall connector weight compared with some rectangular modular solutions.

Toolless Assembly and Service Flexibility
MOVE-MOD connectors are designed for toolless assembly, enabling modules to be inserted or rearranged without specialized tools. This can shorten installation time during equipment production and simplify field service when configuration changes are required.

Reducing the number of discrete connectors also lowers the total count of potential failure points in cable assemblies, which can improve long-term reliability in distributed industrial systems.

Surface Finishes for Demanding Environments
For use in corrosive or exposed environments, the series offers RoHS-compliant ruggedized finishes. Options include Blue Generation (T240) and Black Hard Anodized (T89) treatments, both intended to improve resistance to corrosion and mechanical wear over extended service life.

Applications Across Transport and Industrial Systems
The modular connector system is suited for rail infrastructure, specialty vehicles, power distribution equipment, and factory automation. In these applications, combining power, signal, and data transmission within a single sealed interface helps reduce installation complexity while maintaining environmental sealing and mechanical robustness.
