NXP Launches New Processor Fusing Edge AI With Wireless Connectivity

The i.MX 93W applications processor integrates a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) with secure wireless connectivity to facilitate the deployment of physical AI. By combining these functions into a single package, the architecture is designed for technical applications in smart building management, industrial gateways, and healthcare monitoring where real-time coordination of local AI agents is required.

Consolidation of Edge Computing and Connectivity
The i.MX 93W architecture addresses the complexity of the digital supply chain by replacing up to 60 discrete components with a single highly integrated SoC. This reduction in component count minimizes board area and simplifies the bill of materials for original equipment manufacturers. The device features a dual-core Arm Cortex-A55 applications processor paired with a dedicated Arm Ethos NPU, which delivers up to 1.8 eTOPs (tera-operations per second) of machine learning performance.

To support the automotive data ecosystem and broader IoT landscapes, the SoC integrates an IW610 tri-radio. This sub-system provides simultaneous support for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth Low Energy, and IEEE 802.15.4 protocols, enabling compatibility with Matter and Thread networking standards. This integration eliminates the need for external RF tuning and addresses common coexistence challenges between different wireless protocols.

Technical Implementation and Security Standards
During the Embedded World exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, held on March 9, 2026, the technology was presented as a solution for reducing development risk through pre-certified reference designs. These designs are certified across multiple regions, allowing developers to bypass standard RF integration hurdles and shorten regulatory approval timelines.

Security is managed via the integrated EdgeLock Secure Enclave (Advanced Profile).This hardware-based root of trust provides dedicated resources for security-critical functions, including:
  • Secure boot and authenticated software updates.
  • Device attestation and encrypted key storage.
  • Compliance support for the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
When coupled with NXP’s EdgeLock 2GO service, the processor allows for secure remote provisioning during manufacturing or while deployed in the field.

Industrial and Healthcare Applications
The primary utility of the i.MX 93W lies in its ability to support coordinated AI agents—software entities that must collaborate locally with low latency. In industrial settings, this allows for the synchronization of machinery and energy infrastructure monitors without relying on cloud-based processing. In healthcare, the SoC enables the integration of wearables and smart diagnostics into a unified health gateway that processes sensitive data locally.

The i.MX 93W is scheduled to begin sampling in the second half of 2026. The platform is supported by the eIQ AI enablement software, which provides the tools necessary for mapping neural networks to the integrated hardware accelerators.
