Diodes Introduces AL8859Q Boost Controller

Diodes Incorporated has introduced the AL8859Q, a multi-phase SPI boost controller designed for automotive headlight control systems and other high-power vehicle applications.

The automotive-compliant device is engineered to meet key requirements for power density, efficiency, electromagnetic interference (EMI) control, and functional safety in modern vehicle lighting architectures.

Power management for advanced vehicle lighting
The AL8859Q acts as a constant-voltage pre-stage controller for adaptive automotive lighting modules.

These systems integrate multiple lighting functions within a single module, including:

  • High beams
  • Low beams
  • Daytime running lights (DRL)
  • Turn indicators
  • Fog lights
  • Cornering lights

The controller also supports broader automotive power management applications requiring high-efficiency voltage boosting.

Multi-phase architecture for high power
The controller features a current-mode multi-phase boost architecture with a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 60 V, allowing compatibility with multiple vehicle power systems such as:

  • 5 V
  • 12 V
  • 24 V
  • 48 V

Each device supports two phases, while multiple devices can be synchronized to achieve three- or four-phase configurations.

This design enables output power levels from 100 W to 400 W while maintaining:

  • Balanced thermal distribution
  • Reduced ripple current
  • High efficiency of approximately 95%

Programmable control and system flexibility

The SPI digital interface allows engineers to configure system parameters through programmable registers, including:

  • Output voltage
  • Switching frequency
  • Current limits
  • Protection thresholds

This software-based configuration enables a single hardware platform to support multiple vehicle applications, simplifying design reuse across different automotive systems.

The device also includes one-time programmable memory, allowing production line configuration and enabling fail-safe operation even without a microcontroller.

Integrated diagnostics and EMI management
To support automotive reliability and functional safety requirements, the controller incorporates extensive protection and monitoring features such as:

  • Thermal warning and shutdown
  • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection
  • Current limiting
  • SPI error detection
  • VDRIVE monitoring

The device also integrates spread-spectrum frequency modulation, helping automotive lighting systems meet CISPR 25 Class 5 EMI standards while reducing the need for large external filters.

Compact design for automotive electronics
The AL8859Q is housed in a compact V-QFN4040-24 wettable flank package measuring 4 mm × 4 mm, allowing efficient PCB space utilization and enabling automated optical inspection during manufacturing.

According to Diodes Incorporated, the controller is priced at approximately $0.60 in 10,000-piece quantities, making it suitable for high-volume automotive electronics production.
