Next-Gen Modular Backplanes Simplify Intelligent Automation Integration

LÜTZE, Germany, is introducing a new generation of ultra-compact backplanes with LCOS-LUNA. These allow tool-free direct mounting of function modules such as the LCOS current monitoring units – significantly reducing installation time.

Thanks to true plug-and-play functionality, there’s no need for screws, wiring or additional bridges. A key feature of the LCOS-LUNA backplanes is the continuous Powerbus, which supports input currents of up to 100 A at supply voltages of up to AC/DC 230 V or DC 24 V. The integrated data bus ensures seamless integration into common fieldbus systems such as PROFINET, EtherCAT or Ethernet/IP – ideal for modern, connected automation solutions. LCOS-LUNA supports intelligent current monitoring including load management, condition-based maintenance, and predictive maintenance. This significantly improves system availability – a major benefit, especially for machine and plant engineering, metal processing, and the automotive industry.

LÜTZE offers the LCOS-LUNA backplanes (LÜTZE Universal Network Adapter) as feed-in or extension modules, with either six or eleven slots. The LUNA feed-in modules allow for centralized power and fieldbus input, eliminating the need for redundant wiring. If the existing six or eleven slots are not enough, the system can be flexibly expanded using LUNA extension modules – for example, to add LCOS fuse modules or integrate additional system components such as the AirBLOWER control unit or LCOS Ethernet switches. Both feed-in and extension modules are available in active versions with data bus or passive versions without it. Unused slots can be sealed with form-fitting covers to protect the system from external influences.

The flexible LCOS-LUNA architecture optionally allows data bus looping while keeping power input decoupled between the feed-in and extension module. This enables applications where, for example, PROFINET is used throughout, but different power supplies are required – such as AC/DC 24 V at the feed-in module and AC/DC 48 V at the extension module.
