TDK introduces vibration-resistant hybrid polymer capacitors for demanding automotive & industrial systems

Enhanced mechanical stability for harsh-environment electronics
TDK Corporation has expanded its B409x series of hybrid polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors with a new vibration-resistant variant designed to operate reliably in high-mechanical-stress environments. The updated design incorporates four stabilizing posts extending from the base plate, enabling the components to withstand vibrations of up to 30 g, verified according to MIL-STD-202, Method 204. These new versions carry the part-number suffix 100, while standard models retain suffix 000.

The strengthened mechanical construction targets automotive and industrial applications where components are exposed to continuous vibration, shock loads, or high-temperature duty cycles.

Electrical performance and operating conditions
The SMD capacitors are offered with voltage ratings from 25 V to 80 V and capacitance values between 56 µF and 1100 µF. The components feature a 10 mm diameter and heights ranging from 10.2 mm to 16.8 mm. Depending on the series:
  • B40950 supports temperatures from –55 °C to +105 °C
  • B40910 extends operation up to +150 °C
The polymer electrolyte enables a low ESR of 10 mΩ to 33 mΩ and high ripple-current capability between 2.8 A and 5.8 A.

Useful life ratings include:
  • >4000 h at +125 °C (rated voltage and ripple current)
  • >10,000 h at +105 °C for B40950 industrial-grade variants
Engineers can model application-specific operating lifetime using TDK’s browser-based AlCap Tool, which calculates expected service life based on electrical and thermal conditions.

Applications in automotive and industrial electronics
The series is suitable for systems exposed to mechanical vibration and elevated thermal loads, including:
  • Power steering units
  • DC-DC converters
  • Cooling fans, electric pumps, and brake systems
  • Robotics, e-mobility devices (e-bikes, e-scooters), GPUs, and power tools
The components are surface-mountable, compatible with reflow soldering, and RoHS-compliant. With both standard and vibration-resistant versions now available, designers can match capacitor selection to the mechanical profile of each application without sacrificing electrical performance.
