Chlorine-free, environmentally friendly and excellent material properties: PPS compounds from SK Chemicals
ECOTRAN® from SK Chemicals is the world's first chlorine-free and environmentally friendly polyphenylene sulfide (PPS).
Compared to conventional PPS, production is carried out using an innovative polymerization process that completely dispenses with toxic solvents and minimizes the necessary water requirement. As a result, production is particularly resource-efficient and no process by-products such as sodium chloride are produced.
ECOTRAN® PPS compounds are characterized by outstanding properties. In addition to high purity, they have low outgassing, which results in less mold buildup and reduces or completely eliminates downstream processes such as annealing.
In addition, the compounds meet the UL94 V-0 standard without the need for a flame-retardant additives. The materials are less corrosive to metals and produce hardly any toxic gases in the event of fire. This is why ECOTRAN® is used, among other things, to manufacture numerous components such as connectors, coil formers and switches.
The semi-crystalline high-temperature thermoplastic is also an ideal material for replacing metal in structural applications and an economical alternative in the field of die-casting alloys. In these applications, ECOTRAN® is characterized above all by very high thermal stability, stiffness, strength, creep resistance and exceptional chemical resistance.
Due to the low coefficient of thermal expansion, minimal moisture absorption and excellent flowability, even filigree components with tight tolerances can be produced from the PPS compounds. These properties, combined with inherent flame retardancy, make ECOTRAN® the ideal material for applications in the automotive industry, electronics sector and electromobility. It is precisely for applications in these sectors that the impact-modified ECOTRAN® compounds come into their own:
- Very high continuous service temperature
- Excellent resistance to oils, hydrolysis and aggressive chemicals
- No known solvent below 200 °C
- Inherently flame retardant according to UL 94 V0
- Low tendency to creep, even at elevated temperatures
- Increased ductility compared to standard PPS
- Excellent price/performance ratio even in interpolymer competition
