Toshiba Launches Compact 40V eFuse ICs For Power Line Protection

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has expanded its electronic fuse (eFuse) portfolio with the TCKE6 series, a 40V-rated line of integrated circuits designed to replace conventional physical fuses in industrial and consumer applications. These devices provide high-speed circuit protection and diagnostic functions for power management systems in robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and home appliances.

Integrated protection for the digital supply chain
The TCKE6 series is engineered to address the growing complexity of the digital supply chain by consolidating multiple protection functions into a single semiconductor device. Unlike traditional glass tube or chip fuses that require replacement after a single event, these eFuse ICs provide repeatable, high-precision protection against short circuits, overcurrent, and overvoltage.

The series includes five models — TCKE601RA, TCKE601RL, TCKE602RM, TCKE603RA, and TCKE603RL — designed to protect sensitive downstream components in systems such as robotic vacuum cleaners and industrial automation equipment. By integrating thermal shutdown and current-limiting mechanisms, the ICs prevent damage from abnormal heat generation or electrical surges that could otherwise lead to system downtime.

Technical specifications and performance data
The TCKE6 series supports an input voltage range from 3.3V to 30V, making it compatible with standard 5V, 9V, 12V, and 24V power rails. Key technical parameters include:
  • Switching Speed: The ICs feature a typical short-circuit response time (ONSHORT) of 0.1µs at 25°C, ensuring immediate isolation during a fault.
  • Efficiency: A low on-resistance (RONOUT) of 1Ω (typical) minimizes power dissipation during normal operation, maintaining system efficiency.
  • Dimensions: Housed in a TSOP6F package, the devices measure 2.9mm by 2.8mm with a height of 0.8mm, enabling a significant reduction in circuit board footprint compared to discrete protection solutions.
Versatility in the automotive data ecosystem
While primarily targeted at industrial and consumer electronics, the robustness of the TCKE6 series aligns with modern requirements for the automotive data ecosystem, where compact and reliable power regulation is essential. The series offers three distinct recovery modes to meet diverse safety requirements:
  • Auto-retry: Automatically restores power once the fault is cleared (TCKE601RA/603RA).
  • Latch-type: Remains off after a fault until an external reset signal is received (TCKE601RL/603RL).
  • Selectable: The TCKE602RM allows engineers to switch between auto-retry and latched modes via external signals.
Additional diagnostic features include a FLAG function to report abnormal conditions to a host controller and an enable (EN) function for manual power path control. These capabilities reduce the need for external discrete components, simplifying the overall Bill of Materials (BOM) and improving long-term reliability by reducing potential points of failure.
