Keysight Technologies has introduced enhanced signal analysis capabilities in its 89600 Vector Signal Analysis (VSA) software, supporting AttoTude’s development of terahertz (THz) interconnect technology. The collaboration targets high-bandwidth, energy-efficient data transmission for AI and hyperscale data center environments.
THz Interconnects for AI Infrastructure
As AI workloads scale, data centers require higher bandwidth and faster communication between processing units. AttoTude’s approach uses application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to transmit data over low-loss THz waveguides, operating at frequencies up to 1 THz.
The platform supports data rates of up to 448G using PAM4 modulation, with potential applications in large-scale AI clusters and high-capacity switching systems. These requirements place significant demands on signal integrity and waveform characterization.
Advanced Signal Analysis Capabilities
Keysight’s solution combines its UXR oscilloscope with the 89600 VSA software, enabling detailed analysis of high-frequency signals modulated onto THz carriers. The FlexFrame measurement capability within the VSA software allows flexible configuration of signal analysis parameters, supporting complex modulation schemes.
Recent enhancements improve frequency estimation accuracy in challenging channel conditions, where noise and distortion can affect signal quality. Additional features include streamlined predistortion and receiver equalization functions, which help compensate for channel impairments and improve data transmission reliability.
Supporting High-Frequency Signal Characterization
At THz frequencies, signal behavior is influenced by factors such as propagation loss, dispersion, and hardware limitations. Accurate measurement and analysis are essential for optimizing system performance and ensuring reliable communication.
The enhanced software tools allow engineers to evaluate waveform characteristics, identify sources of distortion, and refine system designs. This is particularly important for PAM4 modulation, where multiple signal levels increase susceptibility to noise and interference.
Relevance for Hyperscale Data Centers
The development of THz interconnects reflects ongoing efforts to address bandwidth and energy efficiency challenges in hyperscale data centers. As data rates increase, traditional electrical interconnects face limitations in speed and power consumption.
THz-based solutions offer a potential pathway to higher data throughput with reduced energy per bit, supporting the growing demands of AI-driven workloads. Accurate signal analysis tools are critical for validating these technologies and accelerating their transition from development to deployment.
